We propose that a new bylaw is created within the zoning ordinances of the City of Columbus that allows for backyard urban chickens and specifies the following:
No person shall own more than four (4) hens; roosters are not permitted. No person shall place a coop, pen, housing, or enclosure closer than 25 feet to any neighboring residence. All coops, pens, housing, and enclosures shall be clean and free from insects and disagreeable odors, and hens will be restrained and enclosed at all times on the premises; hens will not be permitted to roam at large. Hens are permitted outside of their coops, pens, housing, and enclosure only when under direct supervision. Feed will be stored in airtight containers impenetrable to rodents and flies. Chickens are to be considered pets and are not to be raised for meat; butchering will not be permissible within city limits.
Hi Kathy~
ReplyDeleteI love your enthusiasm about having chickens and hope by now the laws have been changed to where Columbus will allow a small flock for fresh eggs. Just let those against changing taste the huge difference between store bought eggs and the ones your own chickens give you and they ought to be doing all they can to make sure the law allows them.
I came across your blog this evening as I was looking up various areas of information for Columbus. I moved to Fall River as a new bride when I was 17 years old and moved to Columbus about 1 1/2 years later and lived on Fuller Street and then around the Fountain Prairie area and then my husband was transferred to Massachusetts, but 6 months later we moved back to Columbus and eventually ended up here in Texas, but would love to move back to Wisconsin.
I wish you all the best!
Linda
Thank you for stopping by, Linda! I also appreciate your enthusiasm for good food!
ReplyDeleteNamaste,
Kathy
Kathy, I, too, have stumbled across your blog while searching for Columbus info. I was super excited as I have often wondered if Columbus allowed chickens. I live on Dickason Blvd here in Columbus and would be happy to help support this cause! I currently buy my eggs from a friend who has a small farmlet in Marshall and has free range chickens. You can definitely taste difference! You can email me at xiuxiuperu@gmail.com with any info. Thanks! Amanda
